Skiving

Leather skiving or splitting is the process of reducing the thickness of a hide by cutting its back with precision machinery.

Skiving can be almost fundamental sometimes: by making the hide thinner, it becomes more pliable and so easier to fit over parts of the automotive interior, especially dashboards. All this without compromising the strength of the leather.
